Text Box: On Saturday, October 1, 2005, A Spot For Tea kicked off the tearoom’s book club, Talking Over Teacups. A good cup of tea was offered, mixed with a cozy book and the group began with a delightful morning of sipping tea and discussing plots, authors, themes and tearooms.

The first series discussed by the group was the Tea Shop Mysteries by Laura Childs.
Owner Tammy Seibert lead discussions, brought each book to life in her own
tearoom and gave a creative presentation of the Laura Childs’ series. There were seven books in the series and one on the way. The first book is Death by Darjeeling
followed by Gunpowder Green, Shades of Earl Grey, The English Breakfast
Murder, Jasmine Moon Murder, Chamomile Mourning, Blood Orange Brewing and Dragonwell Dead . Each book is available for purchase at the tearoom.

Fast forward two years and welcome to our new book club selection “At Home In Mitford”. A town where front porches are a common place, homemade desserts are always plentiful and words “friend” and “neighbor” go together almost as well as Puny’s Squash Casserole (see our newsletter for recipe). It’s where hometown happenings meet mysteries of faith and matters of the heart. It’s the town that started it all for author Jan Karon.

One book led to another, and soon the books were referred to as The Mitford Series. Jan who wrote her first novel at age 10, felt called to become a writer. Though she developed her creative gifts into a successful advertising career, the desire to devote herself fully to writing was strong enough to prompt her, at age 50, to leave her big-city career, relocate to Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write full-time.

Stuggling with a novel that would not come to life, Jan was in bed unable to sleep, worried about how she would pay her mortgage, when a simple image of a fairly short, balding, overweight priest walking down a village street popped into her head. So inspired was the image that Jan got up, went to her writing studio, and started writing. The priest was Father Timothy Kavanagh, around whose life all the books in The Mitford Series are centered.

Jan Karon says, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it cannot be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God. A lot of people have asked if Mitford, and I say, ‘Indeed it is real, and it’s everywhere; it’s all over the country.” I wrote the kind of book I wanted to read - without any cussin’ or any mayhem that is found in so many books and I discovered that people absolutely loved it. I want to encourage people to go out there and live their dreams.

Owner Tammy Seibert first read the series and fell in love with the characters a few years ago and wanted to share the book with the Talking Over Teacups Book Club. Each book has a discussion guide in the back and the group members will be able to go over the questions before coming to the next meeting.

“The series has such a special place in my heart and each book makes you feel good inside. That’s the best reason of all to sit down, have a cup of tea and relax with a great book.” says Tammy.

If you would like to be a part of the Talking Over Teacups book club come by the tearoom, buy your book and fill out the registration form. All members will receive postcard reminders about upcoming meetings. The book club meets quarterly in January, April, July and October in the tearoom.
